Did I Say She Was Mean and Uptight?

Turns out the good ladies at the Baptist church where Bo's daycare is located are a hell of a lot more tolerant and nice than I might be... Today's 4:30 meeting with the director and two teachers was not at all what I expected. They don't want Bo to leave. They just wanted some ideas on how to make him stop biting and hitting.

Gee. That's downright nice of them. Seriously. We had a wonderful, open conversation with them about Bo and his personality and temper and smart little brain and precious moments and monstrous days. They just wanted to create a plan with us to see if we can get this under control. Today he bit FOUR kids... Yikes. And they still want him there.

So here's the plan, we are going to replicate his most challenging moments of daycare each day at our house -- circle time where he is asked to sit still for 15 minutes for a group activity, station time where he is asked to rotate around the room in three different small group activities and "cool down" time which is an alternative to "time out". I offered to buy the center a small library of Bo's favorite books. When he gets "the look" he will be placed in a "cool down" area where he can sit, look at books, put together puzzles, etc. and chill out for a bit.

We discussed the fact that he is the youngest child in the room, but one of the brightest (that's not a boastful mama talking, they said it, I swear!) and that while he learns quickly, he still lacks communication skills to deal with challenging situations. So another area to work on is to encourage him to go to a teacher or parent when he is mad and not to retaliate by hitting or biting.

All in all, it was a great conversation. I'd really like to do something for these two teachers. I'm thinking gift cards or something would be nice.

And what a relief to cancel or at least postpone finding a new daycare. They are not easy to come by and I'm not so sure, after talking to them and hearing about his patterns more, that moving him would help the situation.

Aaahhh, one stress removed from life.

And now on with the show! Tonight's "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" performance at the Des Moines Playhouse was awesome!!! I forget how much I enjoy live theater. Our coworker Kent had the starring role and he was just fabulous! Singing, dancing, accents, humor -- what fun! It's here for a couple weeks so if you're in the area, buy tickets and support the theater! You won't regret it.

Happy Friday, everyone! Oh, and happy birthday Jordan and Jenny -- two best cousins a gal could have!

And happy April Fool's Day -- please honor the holiday and play a prank on someone. I'm working on a few myself....

  1. Glad the daycare situation seems to be working out! I know that must be frustrating...and a challenge. Don't you wish he could just say - I decided to bite that kid b/c ???. Oh well, you both are good parents and will figure out what's best. The opera day sounded fun. Jordan and Bryan coming for the wknd - company coming - baby showers...LARGE weekend.
